What is so Unique About Centrifugal pumps?

Centrifugal pumps are used by Hydraulic systems for the transfer and movement of the fluid through pipes. When the fluid is pushed in the pump, it converts input power to kinetic energy in the fluid and thus accelerating the fluid by impeller which is a revolving device. The process creates a vacuum and hence helps in drawing of water with the help of the pump.

Centrifugal pumps are a lot better than the traditional pumps because of a lot of reasons.

  • Centrifugal pumps have high level of discharge/high level of head and it’s easier to customize them in between.
  • Centrifugal pumps are compact, and so it takes very little floor space and hence are easier to handle.
  • Owing to their compact nature, there is very less heat transfer from the motor and friction is reduced but still despite being small in size it creates pretty much the same output as other pumps of bigger sizes.
  • Also, centrifugal pumps do not require much of a complex maintenance and complicated servicing because of their size and less complex design.
  • Centrifugal pumps are also unique because they are leak proof as they have valves or drive seal and they do not have most of the moving parts like other pumps do. Because of this reason hazardous liquids can be pumped into them without worrying about any sort of leakage which might be harmful. This is the reason why most pumps are used for water transfer but centrifugal pumps can be used for heavy liquids such as petroleum, radioactive liquid and hazardous chemicals.
  • A centrifugal pump can easily handle heavy and dirty fluids and can easily withstand temperatures up to 400 degrees which is much higher when compared to normal pumps, which are not able to withstand that level of heat.
  • Unlike other pumps Centrifugal pump can directly be connected to a power source because it does not require stepping. They can use different modes of power supply including AC, DC, steam, hydro power, gas and even solar power.
It is also used for various other purposes, often for multiple uses. Many companies use it for different works like dairy farms use them for keeping their products safe and hygienic; They are also getting popular amongst electric utility pumps to produce energy. Food processing services have started to use it to keep their products fresh for a longer time.

There are different kinds of centrifugal pumps for specific purposes. Steam engines use Ballast and bilge type centrifugal pumps to remove and load water in and out of the bilge. Drum centrifugal pump is a lot popular to transfer contents of drums and tanks. Sewage water processing plants frequently use Grinder centrifugal pumps and so on.

These are a few of the many reasons why Centrifugal pumps are so unique and are very popular in almost every field of industries and among industrial houses. Due to their simple size and effective costs they are replacing conventional pumping system that is comparatively costly and requires much more maintenance. Hence, the centrifugal pumps are quite a superior tool of industrial usage, and are a must use for industrial houses, especially in the days of advancing technology and cutthroat competition, these advanced centrifugal pumps give your industry a cutting edge advantage over your competitors.

How Centrifugal Pumps Have Become Important for Heavy Industries

The pumps that are most commonly used in industries are centrifugal pump which is used to move water or other fluid with the help of impeller, where conversion of rotational kinetic energy to the hydrodynamic energy of the fluid flow takes place. Heavy industries are showing an emerging trend and require these centrifugal pumps to achieve the core work of industry. Why these pumps are used so vigorously in industries, some of the common uses include water, sewage, petroleum and petrochemical pumping. Let us know how these pumps came into existence, according to Reti, the first machine that could be characterized as a centrifugal pump was a mud lifting machine which appeared as early as 1475 in a treatise by the Italian Renaissance engineer Francesco di Giorgio Martini. True centrifugal pumps were not developed until the late 17th century, when Denis Papin built one using straight vanes.

Reason why these pumps are so popular in heavy industries, the usage itself is an answer for this. Some of the applications are listed as following:
  1. Textile sector - Bleaching of fabrics and silk
  2.  Food  sector- Sugar refining, bleaching, and disinfecting
  3. Water/Chemicals sector - Purifying water, deodorizing sewage, and industrial effluents.
  4. Pulp and Paper sector - Bleaching pulp, fireproofing and wood preserving.
  5.  Agriculture sector - Fertilizer, fungicide, and insecticide manufacturing
  6.  Electronics sector - Chip and metal cleaning, and acid waste transfer
  7.  Steel sector - Steel and Stainless steel picking
  8.  Oil and Gas sector - petroleum purification
  9.  Chemical sector- Catalyst transfer, and neutralizing
  10.  Metal Treating sector - Anodizing, and electroplating
The usefulness of centrifugal pump are just one side of the coin, the other side of the coin is its advantages.

  1. There are no drive seals; hence it reduces the risk of leakage. This gives an advantage of pumping hazardous liquids without spillages.
  2.  No heat transfer from the motor— a thermal barrier is provided by an air gap that separates the pump chamber from the motor.
  3.  There is a complete separation of the liquid means that liquid cannot seep into the motor from the pump.
  4.  Reduced friction.
  5.  Magnetic coupling can be broken—if the load of the pump is too great the magnetic breaks, it means the pump does not overload and get damaged.
After going through all this above mentioned points, I think the question how centrifugal pumps have become important for heavy industries has been very well answered.

Sump Pumps For Varied Applications

By Marcos Esteban

Sump pumps are typically used to remove excess water from a particular area. These pumps do not prevent water or fluid from accumulating but assist in pulling out that water. These pumps sit in a basin or sump and hence it derives its name. Most of us are familiar with it since it is used in almost all houses, which have basements. Houses with basements have a common problem of water logging due to rains or drains flowing back. Sump pumps remove this water and send it to either a sloped backyard or a municipal storm drain.

Although sump pumps are commonly used for domestic households, they have a lot of industrial applications too. There are various kinds of sump pumps that are used for different applications.

1. Bilge and Ballast pump: Bilge is the lowest compartment on a ship, which is below the water line. Bilge water is found in almost all vessels aboard. Sump pumps are used to remove water from bilges.

2. Sewage pumps: These pumps take the effluent and waste to septic or sewage tanks. Some modified pumps also have grinders, which grind the sewage to fine slurry for ease of pumping and disposal.

3. Cantilever sump pumps: These pumps are designed to work with corrosive materials and can also work at higher pressures and temperatures of fluid. They are used for chemical wastes, plating wastes; electrolytes or nickel-plating baths and other difficult sump pump services.

4. Submersible sump pumps: These pumps function when submerged in water or fluid. It houses a watertight motor designed to work only when completely sunk in the fluid.

5. Centrifugal sump pumps: These pumps are used for fluids, which have strong corrosion, high concentration, and which contain suspended solid particles. They are mostly used in power plant industry or metallurgy and mining industry.

6. Water powered sump pumps: These pumps are generally much less powerful than all the above-mentioned pumps. They run on city water pressure instead of electrical power. If the water pressure is low, these kinds of pump do not function properly.

When selecting a sump pump, the most important aspect to consider is the size of the pump and the basin in which it will be housed. Sump pump protects the house from a potential disaster of flooding. Hence, a routine inspection, maintenance and repairs should be scheduled to avoid critical situations.
